How to Keep Your LVT or LVP Looking Brand New (and Germ Free)

Share

There are many benefits to installing luxury vinyl tile and luxury vinyl plank flooring; they’re more affordable, can be used in a variety of commercial and residential settings and they authentically mimic the appearance of more expensive flooring materials.

Metroflor LVT and LVP’s inherent water-resistance and extreme durability was designed intentionally to maximize the luxury vinyl’s longevity. But like most things, the care and maintenance given to our flooring options can help it maintain its brand-new look and finish for longer.

Durability of LVT and LVP

Solid Vinyl Construction

The construction process makes LVT and LVP moisture resistant and minimizes scratches, peeling and delamination.

Each tile or plank has a clear vinyl wear layer that is scratch and stain resistant on top of the decorative pattern layer.

Additionally, there is a ceramic bead overlay that suspends within the clear urethane coating for an added layer of durability.

Lastly, for each tile or plank there is a multi-layered vinyl core, which gives the stability you would expect in a quality flooring option. The core is also flexible, which ensures that the flooring is warm and comfortable underfoot as well.

Even with a design and composition that is so durable and low maintenance, there are some things you can do to properly care for your flooring.

Daily Maintenance and General Tips

There are some basic steps you can take to ensure that your flooring remains in the pristine condition even years after installation.

Sweep, Vacuum and Dust Daily

Use only vacuums without beater bars, as they could potentially damage the LVT.

Use Mats for Outside Entrances Where Possible

This will protect your flooring from excess dirt and debris that can be tracked in by foot traffic. Avoid the use of rubber-backed mats as some types of rubber can stain vinyl permanently.

Use Plastic, Glass, Felt or Other Non-Staining Circular Pads Underneath Large Furniture or Appliances

Although LVT and LVP are scratch resistant, circular pads can further prevent scratches or indentations that may occur over time. Always use the proper equipment when moving heavy furniture or appliances to avoid any damage that may occur during the moving process.

Mop using Prevail Ready-to-Use Neutral Cleaner

Use microfiber mops for any wet mopping and do not use anything coarser than 3M-equivalent scouring pads or brushes for deeper cleaning.

It’s also recommended that you only use Prevail products on your floor. These products have been specially designed and made for urethane coated flooring options so they will not damage the flooring as they clean.

Avoid Exposing Your Flooring to Potentially Hazardous Materials or Conditions

Most vinyl flooring is extremely water resistant, but prolonged exposure could potentially cause issues. Avoid allowing standing water to remain pooled on your floor, whether it is from a spill or some type of flooding. Be aware that burns from things like candles or cigarettes could also damage the vinyl.

Avoid Prolonged Exposure to Sunlight and Wipe up Spills Right Away

Though LVT is resistant to stains, spills should be cleaned up right away. Exposure to direct sunlight for prolonged periods of time could lead to discoloration in extreme cases. There is also the possibility that tiles may expand or contract during extreme temperature changes.

Right After Installation

Always allow adhesives to cure for at least 48 hours before wet-cleaning your new floor.

Also make sure you thoroughly sweep up excess debris or dust that may have collected throughout the installation process.

For glue down installations, remove any excessive dried adhesive residue.

Once the adhesive has fully dried, carefully remove the excess with Prevail 1-Step Neutral Cleaner or mineral spirits applied to a lint-free cloth. Once the excess adhesive has been removed, rinse with water and allow the floor to air dry.

Sanitation

Never Apply Solvents or Other Cleaners Directly to LVT or LVP

In certain situations, such as healthcare settings, stronger cleaners may be required to maintain a sterile environment.

Always test stronger cleaners on a spot of your floor that is less noticeable first before using it on the remainder of the floor. If you do decide to use other cleaners, use Prevail cleaners at the end of the day to remove any buildup or residue that may accumulate as a result of those cleaners.

If automatic scrubbers are employed by your maintenance staff, it should be done so with caution.

As long as you use a low speed machine (175 rpm or less) and one with brushes or pads equivalent to a 3M red pad, automatic scrubbers can be a useful tool, especially in a setting that requires more extensive cleaning.
