How to Bring Calm Comfort into Your Home

Share

If you’re like many people, your home is your oasis. It's a place of peace and comfort where you can feel safe to curl up on the couch with a good book or watch your favorite movie without any distractions.

Unfortunately, homes too often become places of chaos—cluttered with piles of purposeless possessions, illuminated with cold lighting, and painted with mismatched and uninviting colors.

If your home has become overwhelming rather than a source of calmness and comfort, there are many ways in which you can transform it from a stressful chaotic mess into a haven of Calm Comfort.

Declutter Your Spaces

Clutter doesn’t just add stress into your life when you can’t find something you’re looking for – it can also make it difficult to unwind after a busy day. Decluttering your home can be a large undertaking, but the tradeoff is creating a calm and relaxing atmosphere in your home.

Some tips to help you declutter your spaces include:

  • Start with one room at a time: Don’t try to tackle the entire house all at once.
  • Create three piles – keep, donate and trash: As you go through each item, decide which pile it belongs in.
  • Get rid of anything that is broken or no longer serves a purpose in your home.

Be Mindful About the Colors You Choose

The colors of the walls in your home can have a significant effect on your mood. For example, warm colors like red, orange and yellow can create a feeling of energy and excitement and may be a great option for high-energy spaces like your child’s play area, your office and kitchen. Conversely, cool colors like blue and green can create a calming atmosphere and are typically recommended in bedrooms, bathrooms and other rooms where you wish to unwind and relax. Neutral tones like beige and gray can also help to create a sense of balance and harmony. Ultimately, it’s a good idea to choose the color of your walls based on how it makes you feel when you’re in that space.

Be Strategic About Your Lighting

Learn to use the effects of lighting to your advantage. If you’re looking to decompress and relax in your living room or bedroom, you’ll want to use dimmed and warm lights, which contribute to a calm and cozy atmosphere. On the other hand, if you’re looking to work, cook or accomplish another task, it may be best to use task lighting, which provides focused illumination for specific projects and is usually provided by desk lamps, under-cabinet lights and pendant lights.

Adorn Your Spaces with Plants

The beauty and lush green color of plants can create a calming effect in your home. Studies have shown that having plants in your home or office can help reduce stress levels. The presence of plants has been linked to lower blood pressure and heart rate, as well as improved mood. Plants are also natural air purifiers, as they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, which helps reduce indoor air pollution and improve air quality.

Invest in Comfortable Flooring

A cozy home cannot be complete without carefully selected flooring. Flooring can add warmth and texture to any room, making it look more inviting and cozier. It also comes in a variety of colors and patterns so you can find something that fits your style perfectly.

If you’re looking to add that extra layer of warmth, texture and comfort to your floors, consider placing an area rug. Beyond enhanced comfort underfoot, -they can help reduce noise levels in a room and act as an insulator between your feet and cold floors.
