Luxury Vinyl Flooring Installation Checklist

The Ultimate Luxury Vinyl Flooring Installation Checklist

At Metroflor, we want to help you bring your Pinterest board to life with high-quality LVP and LVT floors. Once you’ve found your perfect flooring, the next step is installation. We recommend working with one of your local Metroflor retailers to schedule, estimate, and work with their certified installers.

If you’re someone who loves a challenge, or has a tight budget and timeline, you may be considering DIY. The important thing to note when it comes to a long-lasting LVT, is that installation can make or break your project. At Metroflor, we recommend professional installation to ensure the best results.

Choosing the DIY route means the material is typically still covered against manufacturing defects, but it is important to note that labor costs for repairs or replacements are often only included when the floor is professionally installed. To ensure your project is a success and your warranty remains intact, following "best work practice" essentials is non-negotiable.

Phase 1: Pre-Installation & Acclimation

Before the first plank or tile is laid, the environment must be right.

  • [ ] Acclimate the Product: Store your flooring in the room where it will be installed for at least 48 hours. This allows the material to adjust to the home’s consistent temperature and humidity levels.
  • [ ] Maintain the Climate: Ensure your HVAC system is running. The ideal temperature for installation is generally between 65°F and 85°F.
  • [ ] Inspect Your Planks: Open a few boxes and check for any visible defects. It’s much easier to address a concern before the floor is locked into place.

Phase 2: Subfloor Preparation

Your new floor is only as good as what’s underneath it. Metroflor products like Inception SPC and Genesis WPC offer great subfloor forgiveness, but they still require a solid foundation.

  • [ ] Clean and Clear: Sweep and vacuum the subfloor thoroughly. Any leftover grit can cause "crunching" sounds later or telegraph through the material.
  • [ ] The "Flatness" Test: Use a straightedge to ensure the subfloor is flat (within 3/16" over a 10-foot radius). Our rigid core products can be installed over existing hard surfaces like tile or wood, but they must be level.
  • [ ] Dryness Check: While LVT is waterproof, moisture trapped underneath can cause subfloor damage or mold. If installing over concrete, perform a moisture test to ensure levels are within acceptable limits.

Phase 3: The Layout & Tools

A little bit of math now prevents a lot of headaches later.

  • [ ] Check Your Tools: Ensure you have a rubber mallet, a pull bar, a tapping block, spacers, and a utility knife or saw.
  • [ ] Measure Twice: Measure the width of the room to ensure your final row isn’t a tiny, difficult-to-cut sliver. You may need to trim your first row to balance the room.
  • [ ] Plan Your Stagger: To achieve a natural look, ensure your end joints are staggered at least 6 to 8 inches apart from the previous row.

Phase 4: Installation Best Practices

This is where our "Performance Specialist" engineering shines.

  • [ ] Maintain Expansion Gaps: LVT needs room to breathe. Use spacers to maintain a 1/4" to 3/8" gap (depending on the product) around the entire perimeter of the room and any fixed objects like cabinets.
  • [ ] The Click-Lock Check: When using our floating click systems, ensure each joint is fully engaged. A properly locked joint creates a watertight barrier that prevents topical spills from reaching the subfloor.
  • [ ] Door Jambs: Undercut your door jambs so the flooring can slide underneath. This creates a professional, "no-profile" look and allows for proper expansion.
