Metroflor's LVT sustainability is an expectation by our customers and also by all of us at Metroflor. In fact, it is a baseline of doing business. When it comes to sustainable building products, we all benefit. When it comes to sustainable flooring, the positive impacts can be significant. Metroflor Corporation realizes the importance of sustainability, which is why we have devoted ourselves from the very beginning to adopting sustainable initiatives that create healthy living and work spaces and also benefit the planet. With innovative products and a leadership team that has decades of experience in sustainability initiatives, Metroflor's LVT sustainability initiatives are committed to helping consumers make better choices when it comes to the environment.
Ever since the Stone Family opened Metroflor in 1912, Metroflor has played a deep role in adopting sustainable building practices. Their early dedication to discovering innovative technologies shaped the future of Metroflor and allowed us to introduce a revolutionary flooring concept known as luxury vinyl tile (LVT).
Today, Metroflor's LVT sustainability initiatives continue to lead the way in sustainable flooring by carefully manufacturing and testing all LVT products so that they are superior in design, value, and performance. Certified for quality and environmental management, Metroflor products are both cost-effective and help drive sustainability.
Metroflor's LVT sustainability efforts have demonstrated a strong commitment to consumer safety by addressing two important areas of concern: plasticizers and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Not only did Metroflor lead the way in the phase out of phthalate plasticizers that are linked to many environmental and human health impacts, but we also promote LVT products that are all FloorScore® certified, allowing consumers to rest easy knowing that their flooring holds up to stringent air quality standards.
Along with our high sustainability standards come our equally high standards for transparency. Metroflor is an active participant in the Health Product Declaration Collaborative - a collaboration of organizations, corporations, and companies intent on changing the impact that manufacturing and construction have on our environment and health. The HPD is an open standard, through which manufacturers report what makes up their product and any hazards that consumers need to be made aware. Metroflor has issued an HPD for Aspecta 5, and we have several more HPD’s in development. Additionally, Metroflor has also issued an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) for all vinyl tile products. An EPD is a rigorous third party examination of a product or product family's environmental impact. It entails a detailed breakdown of material content, as well as an inspection of the production process, life cycle, and all of the health and safety information that goes into producing and using the products.
Metroflor walks the talk when it comes to promoting sustainable buildings. With the construction of the Halstead Customer Support Center building, the company demonstrated the potential for other commercial buildings to adopt sustainable measures and create an energy-efficient, cost-effective workplace. We have a green roof, solar panels, and a rainwater collection system for use in irrigation and bathroom fixtures.
Here at Metroflor, we don’t allow this early success to get to our heads. We continue to make strides in sustainability by building a strong leadership team. In July of 2016, the company welcomed the addition of Rochelle Routman as the First Chief Sustainability Officer at Metroflor and Halstead International.
With over 30 years of experience as a sustainability and environmental professional, Routman’s addition will no doubt benefit Metroflor’s continued efforts in eco-friendly initiatives. The 2014 “Ten Most Powerful Women in Sustainability” honoree said that she enjoys working at a company that respects past sustainability efforts while striving to push sustainability even further.

“Halstead and Metroflor have longevity and a very strong focus on constant innovation, both in product and organizationally,” Routman said. “The company officers were looking for someone with a very strong emotional connection and passion for sustainability. I’m very fortunate to assume a leadership position here to guide the ship towards more creative ways to support both the business and the planet.”
The future looks exciting for Metroflor's LVT sustainability, especially with the new installation of such inspiring leadership at its helm. With this strong leadership, the company hopes to continue to spread sustainability through both local and global initiatives.
Metroflor is passionate about promoting sustainability and strives to help others make their communities more environmentally-friendly as well. With the construction of the Halstead Customer Support Center building, the company demonstrated the potential for other commercial buildings to adopt sustainable measures and create an energy-efficient, cost-effective workplace.
In addition to promoting a healthier planet, Metroflor has also demonstrated a strong commitment to consumer safety by addressing two areas of key concern: plasticizers and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Not only did Metroflor lead the way in the phase out of phthalate plasticizers that were known to cause cancer, but the company also promotes LVT products that are all FloorScore® certified, allowing consumers to rest easy knowing that their flooring holds up to stringent safety standards.
The path towards a more sustainable future is within our reach, and Metroflor has been making the effort to promote sustainability since day one. With environmentally-savvy leaders guiding eco-friendly efforts and a strong commitment towards developing sustainable LVT products, Metroflor is paving the way towards a more sustainable future.
